Fall 2010 American & Canadian schedule
2009 <– –> 2011
The 2010-11 season was big for a few things. Cop dramas filmed on location rather than in NYC or LA. Canadian drama series of all genres made a comeback. In addition to Lost Girl, Shattered, and rookie blue which are in the fall schedule as new or repeats from the summer previous there was also the second season of Republic Of Doyle and its renewal for a third, Flashpoint‘s third season which included the season finale being the post-Super Bowl show in Canada, and the spring 2011 premières of The Kennedys, ENDGAME, and king. Who knew that Canwest’s last big idea before surrendering to bankruptcy would result in the resurgence of Canadian programming of a quality such that it has international distribution? And there is more to come in 2011-12. Then there is of course the most surprising and welcomed return of The Listener after nearly 2 years off – season 1 premièred 1 March 2009 in Morocco and season 2 premièred 8 February 2011 in Canada. Who could forget the most recent US Republican Vice-Presidential Candidate’s daughter as one of the contestants on Dancing With The Stars to which i append And A Palin. We still don’t know how Ted meets their mother but for a moment in the season 6 finale we think we finally find out but then he says he is joking and that it is just some random woman in the background he teased us with. Lone Star was the first cancellation of the season with the show getting two episodes broadcast of the six made.
After many, many, many years, Will Estes is F I N A L L Y in a show i watched that gets renewed for a second season. The creators were fired by CBS because they want to make it a procedural that stars some of a family of cops rather than continue with the show about a family where most of them are cops. Can you blame CBS for wanting this? Then tend to do well on their network. Over on itv in the UK 2 of the 3 big new commissionings for 2010-11 were procedural crime dramas (Vera, Injustice) and BBC recently put out one of their own (The Shadow Line). Yet another year where none of the CSI shows get cancelled. Yet another year where they don’t expand the franchise to a fourth city. Despite all of the gloom predictions FRINGE received an early renewal for a full (22 ep) fourth season. Just the other day Chuck received a short fifth season renewal which will put it over 100 episodes; not bad for a show that has been expected to be cancelled ‘any day now’ since early in its first season.
This season marks the last for Dawn Ostroff as head of The CW. Word is that she had some say in what was renewed and what new shows are to be on The CW in the autumn of 2011 but after that the network begins to cleanse itself of her branding. For the first time in many years The CW might get regular viewing from a broader audience.
