Two weeks old but good news
Like the title says, this is somewhat old news. But it is good news if you like some British dramas that have come on itv in the last year. monroe, Scott & Bailey, Case Sensitive, and Vera have all been recommissioned for second series.
monroe is filmed in Leeds and stars James Nesbitt as neurosurgeon Gabriel Monroe. The second series will be six episodes, as was the first. Monroe is now divorced and dealing with life as a single man. How? He throws himself even more into his work at St Matthew’s Hospital. The first series will be on BBC Canada this autumn. So far no word on an American broadcast for the programme.
Scott & Bailey will be back with eight episodes in 2012, production to start in October 2011. The programme explores the personal and professional lives of DC Janet Scott (Lesley Sharp) and DC Rachel Bailey (Suranne Jones – co-creator and series writer as well), both members of Syndicate 9, a Major Incident Team within the Manchester Met Police, who are tasked with tracking down killers.
Case Sensitive is based on the highly acclaimed psychological suspense novels written by Sophie Hannah. Two new episodes with origins in Sophie’s novel “The Other Half Lives” will be produced by Hat Trick Productions. Olivia Williams returns in the lead role of DS Charlie Zailer and with her is Darren Boyd as DC Simon Waterhouse. The new two part story will be adapted by Sarah Williams (Poppy Shakespeare). The first series, also of two episodes, averaged 6 million viewers and a 20% share. The new episodes will be filmed on location in Buckinghamshire.
Vera is the story of an unconventional but somehow still loveable copper, Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope. The series is based on the novels of Ann Cleeves and features Brenda Blethyn, OBE in the titular role. Vera was a huge hit in its first series with an average of 6.6 million viewers and a 25% share for its four 120 minute episodes. Set in contemporary Northumberland and Newcastle, filming of four new stand-alone episodes has already begun. Paul Rutman has written the first episode entitled “The Ghost Position”. Paul has also written the fourth as yet untitled film. Colin Teevan has written the second film “Sandancers” and Gaby Chiappe has adapted the third film “Silent Voices”, from Ann Cleeves’ latest novel.
Also recommissioned are a three episode series of Kidnap & Ransom starring Trevor Eve as Dominic King, an international hostage negotiator. The series will be filmed in South Africa starting next month. With the success of the first film a second feature with Victorian copper Inspector Jack Whicher is in development.
monoroe, Scott & Bailey, and Vera are available in the forum to download. So far only monroe has any announced broadcast in North America.
Shaw sets the date for many of its series’ returns
Some premiere dates of interest have been announced by Shaw, mostly for their cable channels. Here are some of the highlights.
Combat Hospital has its broadcast premeire tonight on Global at 10pm in most time zones. Viewers in the USA can follow along on their local ABC station. The 13 episode series about life in a military hospital during the war in Afghanistan will be repeating on Showcase DiVA Fridays at 8am and 6pm ET beginning 2 September. Repeats will also be available on Showcase [at exactly the same time as NCIS Los Angeles so clearly there is a typo in there somewhere].
rookie blue, the show that won the hearts of millions north and south of the border and became the most watched original scripted series to ever be shown on Global, is back for a second season this coming Thursday at 10pm ET/PT. Viewers in the USA can follow along on their local ABC station. The second season will be repeated on Showcase DiVA beginning Friday 2 September at 9am ET.
XIII, the mystery action series starring Stuart Townsend will be repeating Mondays on Showcase DiVA beginning 29 August with showings at 8am, 6pm, and 10pm. Presently the series is in its first run on Mystery in SD on Wednesday mornings and on Showcase in HD on Wednesday nights. Episode 10 is on tomorrow.
ENDGAME, the show about an agoraphobic world champion chess grand master who turns to solving mysteries to pay the bills that has seen significant turnaround in its viewership since Bill Brioux announced that Shaw was not renewing the series, will be repeating on Showcase DiVA Tuesdays at 8am and 6pm ET beginning 30 August. ENDGAME’s production company, Thunderbird, had some great success at the Banff World Media exposition last week and series star Shawn Doyle has said that the sets are still up and the fan reaction to the cancellation has been noticed. Keep it up and maybe there will be a second season. Click on the chess pieces ‘Save Endgame’ banner in the right column to sign the petition and see what else is going on.
king, the new series from Indian Grove will be repeating Wednesdays on Showcase DiVA beginning 31 August with showings at 9am and 6pm ET.
Trashopolis, the documentary series that explores how today’s mega-cities were formed based on their waste management practices over the centuries, returns for a second season on 1 September at 10pm ET/PT on History Television.
Warehouse 13 will be competing for your attention Thursdays at 10pm when it too returns on 1 September but to Showcase. Previously the show was seen on Citytv in Canada. It will be on an almost 2 month delay from its American schedule; viewers on Syfy (silly name) will return to the warehouse on 11 July.
Haven is back on Showcase DiVA for repeats of season 2 beginning on 1 September at 9am and 6pm ET. The second season starts 15 July in the USA and on 18 July on Showcase. For being a Canadian show made in Canada i have never understood why it is shown 3 days later in Canada.
Lost Girl, the highest rated original series to ever be shown on Showcase, makes its return for a second season of bisexual supernatural adventures at 9pm ET/PT on 4 September.
Covert Affairs, the spy show starring Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorham, makes its return to Canadian television (it is already on in the USA) on 4 September at 10pm ET/PT.
Secret Diary Of A Call Girl‘s third series can be seen on IFC Tuesdays at 9pm ET beginning 6 September.
Big Love, the critically acclaimed series about a polygamist Mormon sect in Utah, will be back Wednesdays on IFC with seasons 3 & 4 at 9pm ET beginning 7 September.
The Pacific, the HBO mini-series from not too long ago, makes its basic cable debut on 9 September at 9pm with the other parts coming the following Fridays.
Rescue Me, the long running series starring Dennis Leary as a troubled firefighter returns to Showcase for its 7th and final season at 11pm ET/PT on 11 September.
Seasons 6 and 7 of House, MD will be seen on Showcase DiVA this coming autumn. The series’ previous seasons have been a staple of the channel so no big surprise there.
NCIS Los Angeles seasons 1 & 2 will be shown in strip syndication (ie M-F) at 5pm ET on Showcase DiVA. Not to be left out of the main channel NCIS LA will be shown on Showcase Monday-Wednesday at 11pm ET/PT. The original series has long been a standard on Showcase and will continue to be seen there.
Dates not yet announced include monroe on BBC Canada this autumn and rizzoli & isles on Showcase this coming winter. What is really odd is that season 1 of rizzoli & isles was shown on the premium cable network Super Channel last year and Shaw announced season 1 for Showcase while noone has said they will be showing season 2, which can be seen on TNT in the USA in a few weeks.
